My process
Double Diamond for the win
I follow a fusion of the Double Diamond design process model popularised by the British Design Council, with Value Proposition Design influences from Strategyzer. I find it critical in my work to identify customer needs and how they align to the jobs they need to get done (JTBD). Not only functional requirements, but emotional and social too. Focusing on pain and gain also provides insights into how particular product offerings can improve a user’s experience.
Discover
Define
Develop
Deliver
The first diamond in this phase we learn how to better understand people. By observing life and listening to hopes and desires, it’s possible to truly focus on the challenge.
Insights gathered from the Discovery Phase can help define the challenges from a different perspective.
The second diamond encourages us to pursue different answers to a clearly defined problem, seeking inspiration from elsewhere and co-designing with a range of people.
Delivery involves testing out different solutions at small-scale, rejecting those that will not work and improving the ones that will.
Expectation
The Double Diamond clearly conveys a design process to both designers and non-designers. The two diamonds represent a process of exploring an issue more widely or deeply (divergent thinking) and then taking focused action (convergent thinking).
But let's face it, if every process were as perfect as the Double Diamond, we'd be living in a utopian world of flawless design methodologies. Unfortunately, reality tends to throw a few curveballs, reminding us that perfection is indeed rare if not impossible.
but in reality…
Double Diamond but pero no mucho
Reality
In reality the design process mirrors the Squiggle (Damien Newman). It embodies the essence of design as a journey filled with discovery and refinement. Acknowledging inherent messiness and uncertainty, it emphasises the eventual clarity and focus attained through iterative problem-solving. The Squiggle serves as a reminder that navigating through ambiguity is essential for crafting truly great designs.
It's a reminder that iconic designs often emerge from embracing and navigating through chaos and uncertainty
